I noticed some redness on Conan’s wrist this morning. At first I thought he had gotten scratched or cut somehow, but upon closer inspection, discovered that he just had a hickey. He can get his thumb in his mouth, but it always seems to pop right back out again, so he’s very enthusiastically taken to sucking on his wrist.
I kept pulling it away from him today, but he managed to expand his love bite some by bedtime. I guess he’s trying to impress his friends.
Since we moved down here we have driven past Georgetown Cupcake (of TLC fame) on many occasions, always taking note of the long line stretching up the street next to the building. Every time we saw this line we thought, “Cupcakes cannot possibly be worth that wait.” Over the course of the last couple of weeks, however, my resolve has been slowly chipped away. The line goes fast, friends told me. They really are that good, others insisted. I decided we had to try them. The boys and I went into DC yesterday on our cupcake adventure. The line really does go fast and they are that good.
3 years olds are not known for their patience, but dangle the possibility of a cupcake in front of him and I think Lincoln would wait in a much longer line then this.
When we finally got in the shop we were greeted by pedestals full of cupcakes. Lincoln wasn’t shy about telling me he wanted a chocolate one.
We were also told that Georgetown Cupcake has a secret flavor everyday that they announce on Twitter. If you order that flavor by name it is free. So, we were extra pleased to receive two free German Chocolate Fudge cupcakes (I love it when Lincoln and/or Conan get free stuff too. They both also got free donuts at Krispy Kreme on National Donut Day)! We ordered a few other flavors and headed out.
Jonathan was working an exceptionally long day yesterday, so we decided to go have our cupcakes at the office with him. I thought I had scored an amazing parking spot at about 3:27 when a very nice parking garage attendant told me I’d have to vacate it by 4 to accommodate rush hour traffic. I called Jonathan and he ran around the corner to meet us at the car and have our cupcakes right there on the street. Lincoln didn’t mind as long as he was stuffing cupcakes in his mouth. Let’s be honest, Jonathan and I didn’t mind as long as we were getting cupcakes too.
Just because he’s not old enough to eat cupcakes, doesn’t mean Conan doesn’t deserve to be in photos too! (I don’t think this baby could possibly be any sweeter!)
Both boys fell asleep in the car on the way home, so one of the remaining cupcakes and I had a little photo shoot on the steering wheel while I waited for one of them to wake up (it was Conan, so I had to carry both kids up three flights of stairs. That has too burn enough calories to justify all the cupcakes I ate, right?)
Jonathan ran the Lawyers Have Heart 10K this weekend, so we all got up extra early and trekked into Georgetown to cheer him on.
It was a little early for Lincoln.
But the Cone-dog didn’t seem to mind.
We had an excellent spot so we were able to see Jonathan when he started and finished. Here he is heading out.
Then we just had to wait for him to run 6.2 miles.
Lincoln and I made Daddy a little sign. Here Lincoln is holding it proudly before the elite runners had even finished. He could not be persuaded to hold it when Jonathan was actually running by.
I couldn’t get a good picture of Jonathan finishing because he was just going so fast, so we’ll have to settle for the Powerade shot with the Porta-Potty background from after he received his finishers medal.
Way to go, Daddy-o! We’re proud of you!

When Santa Claus first brought Lincoln Legos I was worried he was still too young for them. Some of the pieces are so small and you really have to have a lot of hand eye coordination to put them together. We have played and played and played with those Legos though. Jonathan and I (mostly Jonathan) have built thousands of vehicles out of them and Lincoln has logged countless hours playing with those vehicles before destroying them. I’ve noticed over the last couple of days, though, that Lincoln himself is getting quite good at building with the Legos.

Lincoln has been really into trains lately and we have constructed and re-constructed every blasted engine on the Island of Sodor. This afternoon he built his own train, though. I think the use of spare windshields as the cow catcher on the front is quite ingenious. It was harder to get a good picture of the engine because Lincoln couldn’t be convinced to take a break from playing with it, but there was also a car attached to it at one point. I guess Santa was right about the Legos after all.
I successfully completed a couch to 5K program yesterday by running in the Kelley Cares 5K. My boys came to cheer me on despite the early start and Lincoln ran up to congratulate me as soon as I finished. Although my time wasn’t as quick as I would have liked it to be, I’m still pleased to have done it and finished the program. Now I just need to figure out what 10K to sign up for.
There was a food truck rally in DC this weekend, so we went to check it out. These trucks can be found interspersed throughout city during the week, but once in a while they get them all together in a parking lot, making it much easier to sample, taste, and compare. This was our first rally, but I’m sure it won’t be our last.
There were about 35 trucks in the RFK Stadium parking lot and they all looked so different. I loved the way they were all decorated.
We didn’t eat at either of these trucks, but I thought they looked good.
With so many trucks it was hard to decide what to get. In the end we went with the truck with the longest line. I figured it must be good if this many people are in line. I waited diligently for our Korean Tacos and they were very good. They were out of chicken when I got up to the window, so we got two steak and one tofu taco. I haven’t really eaten a lot of tofu, but if it always tastes like it did on that taco I expect to be eating a lot more. Jonathan was less impressed.
We also sampled some more traditional tacos, a samosa, and some cheesecake. Lincoln decided to stick with diaper bag fare and enjoyed some applesauce from a pouch with a side of raisins.
Conan slept the whole time. He’s a very good boy.
They were also opening a new skate park at RFK so we stopped to watch some of the skateboarders.
Lincoln was really impressed. He declared he was going to get a skateboard for his birthday. Thank goodness his birthday is still a long way off.
Lincoln loves loves loves basketball. One thing he loves more then basketball, though, is basketball shorts. He asks me almost everyday to wear his basketball shorts and when he does wear them he constantly tells me that he is a basketball player and asks me if I am too. Today I remembered that we had a little pair of basketball shorts that Conan is big enough for now, so I put them on him. When I called Lincoln over to look he gasped and said, “I want to hold that basketball player!” So he did. And for the rest of the day he kept telling me how he and Conan were basketball players.
